Q&A

Why is that communication skills and soft skills are given so much importance nowdays?
We are living in a globalised economy and are an interdependent society. In this secnario, interpersonal and communication skills are no more an option but mandatory. This is a global phenomenon and Harvard Business Review conducted a survey with HR executives world over on the importance they gave to soft skills over hard skills (technical skills). The overwhelming majority gave a weightage of 80:20 in favor of soft skills. One other reason why this is happening in India is the fact that technical excelence isno more a luzury: we have 30lakh graduates coming out every year and out of them nearly 6 lakhs as post graduates and engineers. Expecting that 50% of them would be first class graduates means there is no dearth of technical talent. One more factor is that the industry practice and anyway the organisation has to train fresh graduates in organisation specific technical skills. So the new mantra made famiiar by HR professionals is "Hire for Attitude, train for knowledge and skills" So the behavior skills or attitude are the yardstick for selection after ensuring the fact that besic technical skills are in place.
